Safely Removing your Flash Drive

For the longest time I didn’t realize that there was a proper way to remove a flash drive from  a computer. I simply took the flash drive and removed it. Since then I have learned that your Windows operating system has a device in place which assists you with removing your flash drive safely without damaging the hardware.

Located in the lower right hand corner of your screen, this device resides on your task bar.

As seen in the image above, the first icon is the tool that you use to safely remove your flash drive. Right click on this icon and a dialog box will appear asking you which hardware you wish to remove. Select the appropriate hardware and then click “Stop”.

Click “Okay” to complete the process.

In order to use it again, you must remove it and then insert the flashdrive back into the usb port.

  1. Great idea Kathy! I often find patrons who don’t know that flashdrives need to be stopped before they are removed. Thanks!
